Geocache Description:

According to the Book of Acts (New Testament), Stephen was one of seven men chosen to attend to the distribution of aid to elderly widows within the early Christian community. (This role came to be known as "deacon".) Stephen was also recognized for his gifts as an evangelist, preaching the teachings of Jesus to the people of Jerusalem. The Book of Acts tells how Stephen was tried by the Sanhedrin for blasphemy against Moses and God, and was then stoned to death (c. A.D. 34-35) by an infuriated mob encouraged by Saul of Tarsus, who became known later as St. Paul.

St. Stephen's Day (December 26), referred to in the Christmas carol "Good King Wenceslas", is a public holiday in England, Wales, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Finland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

This cache, a hide-a-key, has been placed with permission at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Norfolk (founded in 1954).

The drainage ditch that runs under the parking lot of the church is a remnant of an historic canal connecting the Lafayette River and the inlet at Little Creek along which Confederate forces moved supplies from blockade runners.
