This cache is a VERY large ammo can, located near a road
junction with room for parking, and across the road from its
original position.
People drive all kinds of vehicles up here, including mountain
bikes, passenger sedans, vans, jeeps, trucks, and even those
bus-sized RVs. You would be highly encouraged to use a 4WD
vehicle.
Once we saw about 30 jeeps from Delaware pull up at Flagpole
Knob and park. Out of the vehicles poured a number of families,
including kids and dogs, ready to have lunch and take in the view.
They were exploring jeep trails on Slate Springs Mountain and
surrounding features in the GW National Forest. ***update*** The
Delaware Jeep crowd was up here September 7, and remembered seeing
us a couple of years ago. We're kind of hard to miss with the
towers, antennas, generators, and bus-sized RVs.
Often, bear hunters will use this road to hunt and to look for
dogs that have wandered off. The dogs have radio transmitters on
their collars.
The "speedway" part of the cache name comes from sounds we often
hear at 2 or 3 AM while camping at Flagpole Knob. It's amazing what
some folks with 4-wheel-drive vehicles will do!
Note: You will be visiting the home of abundant wildlife,
including rattlesnakes. Do not stick your hand into
any of the hides in this vicinity unless you have thoroughly
checked for snakes. I use a long stick.
Congrats to Team BattleCache for
FTF!!
