Geocache Description:

We invite cachers to visit 20 NEFF-owned Community Forests throughout New England!

The theme is water in the woods. Forests are natural filters that provide clean water for plants, animals and people. Participating geocachers will discover rivers, lakes, creeks, swimming holes, and springs to learn about how forests provide clean water.

New England Forestry Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to conserving forest lands throughout the region. We are happy to welcome Geocachers to enjoy our forests!

The Cache:
MOOSEWOOD FOREST at Hartnett-Manhan Memorial Forest
Easthampton, MA

Parking Coordinates: N42 16.714 W72 44.071

Directions to the Forest:
From I-91 take exit 19 onto Route 9 west towards Northampton. In downtown Northampton merge onto Route 66. Continue for approximately 5.3 miles and make a left turn onto Loudville Road. Continue for approximately 0.8 miles, through the town of Loudville, and merge to your right onto Mineral Street. After approximately 0.4 miles there will be a woods road on your left just after a small stream. The trails for the forest begin here.

Once You're There:
There is plenty of moosewood here. Look for the leaves shaped like moose hooves! Also, go ahead and squash any invasive japanese knotweed you find. It crowds out the native plants, making the forest far less diverse. Find out more about invasive plants at (visit link)

The trees near the hiding place did not fall naturally. As for the water, if it's hot out feel free to take a dip!

About the Forest:
Dennis E. Hartnett bequeathed this parcel on the Manhan River to NEFF. The property is of considerable historic interest, since it contains an abandoned lead mine which may have provided bullets for the Revolutionary War. It is believed that patriot Ethan Allen was once employed there as a lead miner.
