We invite cachers to visit 20 NEFF-owned Community Forests throughout New England!
The theme is water in the woods. Forests are natural filters that provide clean water for plants, animals and people. Participating geocachers will discover rivers, lakes, creeks, swimming holes, and springs to learn about how forests provide clean water.
New England Forestry Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to conserving forest lands throughout the region. We are happy to welcome Geocachers to enjoy our forests!

About the forest:
This property was acquired from William JJ Gordon in 1996. It is a piece of the Rock Pool property, famous in the area for being an “artist” retreat, Betty Davis was known to visit. Named for a unique ledge outcrop along the Gale River in Lisbon, New Hampshire, Rock Pool was a well known summer retreat for both nationally known celebrities and local folks. The property was given by Mr. Gordon of Cambridge, Massachusetts in an effort to stimulate the owners of the remaining portions of Rock Pool to also protect their land.
The property was purchased and divided in the 60’s by Max Wilk and Bill Gordon. The original ownership was about 500 acres split by the Gale River. Max Wilk , a NEFCO client, got about 250 acres ( 110 acres south of river). Bill Gordon gave his son 178 acres who he sold it to Tom & Nancy Sinclair(a NEFCO client). He gave the remainder to NEFF as the Gordon Memorial Forest.
It includes an old gravel pit, NEFF used USDA funds and NRCS technical advice seeded to stabilize in 98. The warm season grasses didn’t hold up to the heavy summer rains, so after a timber harvest in 1998 it was reseeded w/ cool season grasses. It has some blowouts, but is stable. A gate was installed after the sale.
