Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the end of an easy 4 wheel drive road that follows the South Fork San Joaquin River as it flows from Florence Lake in the Big Creek Basin. If it were not for the 4x4 road this cache would be a 1.5/1.5.

This year I had a 4x4 Tundra pickup, however I'm sure that I would not have had any problem driving the dirt road in my small 2 wheel drive pickup. Normally the most difficult place is the river crossing that you come to as soon as you start down the road. This year was a very dry winter and there was little water in the stream, but I have seen it too deep for a low vehicle to safely cross in the spring. Larger vehicles should never have any problem with the water level. The entire road into this area is usually closed by snow from November to May.

This cache is located 2.5 miles from the stream crossing and about .3 miles beyond my Primitive Camp cache at an elevation of about 7000 feet. The drive to the cache is awesome with many nice campsites located along the river. In the area of the cache site there is no place for camping. There were lots of birds and deer in the area.

Under the present condition of the road I do not recommend driving any vehicle the last 180 feet to the cache. It is very steep and much of the road has been washed out. I parked my truck and easily walked down the road. At times the road may be in better shape since Edison has a gauging station located on the river and needs to get its equipment down the hill.

10/1/07 Note:
I just checked on the cache and foud that Edion had graded the road and fixed all of the bad spots, eventhe last 8 feet. I don't know how long the road will remain in such great shape, but for now a Prius could reach the cache.

The area near the cache shows signs of a recent fire and most of the ground cover has been burned away, so finding the full sized ammo box should be easy. I have included several photos of the area.

Happy hunting!
