Geocache Description:

This is a cache for boating geocachers!

While you’re searching for this cache, listen for the chirping whistle of the beautiful osprey. The osprey is a large raptor that can often be seen flying above Shadow Mountain. If you’re really lucky, you’ll see one catch a fish. It will hover briefly in flight, then dive toward the surface of the water. Just before hitting the water, it swings its legs forward and bends its wings back, plunging feet first. If it catches the fish, it will rearrange it in it’s barbed feet to hold the slippery prey head first, presumably making it more aerodynamic.

The osprey may live up to 25 years and they mate for life. Often the pair will use the same nest year after year. Several islands in Shadow Mountain are closed to docking because of efforts to protect these nests. Bring your binoculars. We have seen the chicks in the huge nests from our boat.

Enjoy!
