Geocache Description:

Just another easy cache to point out a great and historic spot in California in the Holcomb valley. There was a micro cache here placed by the SoCal 4x4 group that appears to be MIA and was located closer to the fenced off Hangman's tree.

Two ways to get here - E or W on Big Pine Flat Trail or go North from Big Bear Lake on Polique Canyon Road off the NorthShore - N 34 15.898 x W 116 55.276

We were in the area and believe this is a great point out, something geocaching should do, and placed a new micro in an accessible location for cachers that offers additional offset distance to the actual point out. It is also wheelchair accessible, provided the wheel chair loads in and out of a 4x4 vehicle!

A little more history on this area:

William Francis Holcomb was hunting in the Bear Valley in 1859 when he discovered this gold region that bears his name. Prospectors arrived to work the claim and the town of Belleville arose and was named for road builder Jed Van Dusen's daughter Belle, the first baby born in the new settlement. Belleville supported a typical saloon, Two Gun Bill's, a sawmill, and other businesses. The town boasted a population of 1500 at its peak. The settlement did have a wild side, hence the need for Hangman's Tree. Each time someone was hanged from a limb, that branch was cut off.

You can inspect this fact for yourself! Must have been a lot of wildness there! When the mines failed to produce, this area became a ghost town by the 1880s.

There's a nice geo-pin for the FTF.
