Shields Cemetery - Gone Fishin Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

USAF#1: Due to the recent posts on my other cache hide, Shake Rattle N Roll by a new local cacher I have been asked to remove both caches from the property. This cachers concern about the safety of cachers at a gun range has prompted some discussion by members and club officers. They question this cachers expertise on gun club layout and are proud of a perfect record of no accidents since the club was formed in 1933. They also question the comments from the new cacher about an incident that happened over a year ago by 3 cachers who went over 400 yards beyond the cemetery and were past the sign saying members only. They were asked to leave by the club president only after one cachers language became abusive. The new cachers version was not at all accurate of what really happened. This has caused the club to take another look at geocache hides on club property.

All I can say is: Logansport look out, Heeerrrr's Johnny.

Geocache Description:

Shields Cemetery is a long abandoned burial ground in Noble Township, Cass County located 1 1/2 miles north of Logansport. It is a small family cemetery with some veteran markers. If you see a fallen flag, stand it back proud.

The cemetery is located on property which is currently the grounds of the Cass County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. Park at the "Ikes" parking lot for a short walk to the cache. County records state: The area was formerly known as the "Pleasant Grove (or Kewanna) Pike". The cemetery is on what for generations was known as an island like grove surrounded by the Arnet Shields farm. In order that this cemetery may not be confused with another very similar one in this immediate neighborhood (Horney Cemetery) let it be understood that the Shields Cemetery lies immediately south of the west end (or inlet) of a small artificial lake, sometimes called "The Pool," or "Big Pond" which forms an important part of this conservation clubs tract. It is maintained thanks to the devotion of certain descendants of some of the persons lying buried here.

One family member, Joshua Shields is listed as a soldier who was a Corporal under Capt John Tiptons Company, Harrison Co, Ind., in the War of 1812. In the Battle of Tippecanoe he is listed as a Private under Capt Spencer's Co, Mountain Rifleman, Ind. Records indicate he married that famous Indiana pioneer, public servant, John Tipton's sister, Rhoda. There are other veteran markers here but the inscriptions are weathered and can not be read.

The cache container is a small ammo can. I put in several pieces of terminal tackle for fishing. This is one of my favorite local spots to catch bluegill in the spring. After late May the water becomes covered with algae and is almost impossible to fish. I wanted the cache to be mainly fishing related as the pond has provided me and other members hours of fishing pleasure. It has other trade items as well.

Please - if you take an item - trade it for something of equal or greater value. No Beer Bottle Caps, Pull Tabs, Gravel you picked up in the parking lot or other trash. Believe it or not, even Cachers have no use for those items.
