Reflect back on the past . . . to 1867
when Cornelius O'Keefe, along with his partner Thomas Greenhow,
were driving cattle north to the gold fields to sell to the hungry
miners. They were so impressed with the Okanagan Valley that they
began cattle ranching. By 1900 the O'Keefes and Greenhows owned one
of the largest cattle ranches in British Columbia with over 20,000
acres of prime land. From their humble beginnings, they built up a
small settlement consisting of a general store - with the first
post office in the Okanagan Valley, a blacksmith shop, St. Anne's
Church built in 1889 (and still a popular wedding location) plus
many other necessary ranch buildings. Tierney O'Keefe, Cornelius'
son and his wife Betty restored and rebuilt the original ranch
buildings and opened the Ranch as an historic site in 1967.
Now O'Keefe Ranch is a designated BC Heritage Site and an
important tourist attraction in the Okanagan Valley. Here you'll
discover some of the oldest remaining structures in the Vernon
area, all carefully preserved or restored, each with its own unique
and fascinating exhibit. In a park-like setting, you can also
see/visit the collection of vintage farm machinery, the cemetery,
the museum, the huge model railway display, and the collection of
rare breed farm animals. You can also take a guided tour of the
elegant O’Keefe Mansion or try your hand at gold panning. Come to
Artisan Row and experience for yourself arts historic and modern.
Other features include the restaurant, winery, gift shop, and wine
garden. info from www.okeeferanch.bc.ca
