“Michigan Spirit
Quest”
The Michigan Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries
built by MICHIGAN Pioneers. This series is inspired by and is a
continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by
SixDogTeam. In just over two and a half years, the SPIRIT QUEST has
grown to over five hundred and fifty caches and the hiders have
grown to twenty-five cacher teams in 3 states and one province,
most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans.
Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 20,000
finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in a single day
(daylight hours only).

Michigan Spirit Quest #27 - Golden Ridge
Cemetery
Welcome to the Golden
Ridge Cemetery. This cemetery is the oldest of the city’s three
municipal burial grounds. More than half of the graves here date
from the nineteenth century. William Sutcliffe, who is buried here,
donated this land for a cemetery in 1819. Some of Taylor’s earliest
settlers are buried here as well as merchants and manufacturers.
The earliest legible marker, that of Abel Aspinwall, dates from
1830.
Augustus Coan, a very
early settler of Taylor is also buried here. Augustus came to
Michigan in 1824 with his family and became a prominent pioneer of
the area. He and his sons would own 640 acres of land, part of
which the nearby Southland Shopping center now sits on. Just south
of here is Taylor Heritage Park in which the pond in the park was
named after the Coan family. Augustus’ gravestone is pictured
below.

The cache container is
A small plastic tube-type container and can hold small items
and travel bugs / coins. The cache is not located near a
grave... If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in
the ground or replace it. As always, please be respectful, and
cache in, trash out. Say a prayer for our brave troops,
