Connie&Keith: Spring has deleted this cache! Break up of the Moose River can cause homeowners much stress and it caused some folks to be evacuated this year. Our cache was also evacuated.

Geocache Description:

Travel from Moosonee to Moose Factory island varies depending upon the season. In late spring, summer and early fall the river is ice free and water taxis use freighter canoes between the two communities. During the freeze-up and break-up periods of early spring and late fall, the only means of transport is by helicopter at a cost of about $35 each way. In winter, once the ice has solidly formed on the Moose River the Public Works department prepares the ice road for winter travel.

In July 2000, the Cree Village Ecolodge opened as the first Indigenous owned Ecolodge in the northern hemisphere. This modern building is a state of the art eco-tourism facility, designed and operated by the MoCreebec people in accordance with traditional values and a focus on Cree cultural and ecological sustainability. At least five years of planning prior to the opening, the committee of community members paid attention to every detail in the building of the lodge. The twenty guest room Ecolodge is designed for maximum comfort and minimal environmental impact. Cree Village Ecolodge is in Moose Factory, Ontario, an island community located between the shores of the Moose River 10 to 12 miles from where the Moose River meets the ocean water of James Bay. The island is three miles long by two miles wide. Moosonee is located 1.5 miles across the river from Moose Factory on the mainland. The cache is hidden near the ecolodge. Happy Hunting!
