Located in the ghost town of Whitney Oregon near the historic Sumter Valley Railway. The cache is not wheelchair accessible but easily accessed otherwise. A short travel down a dirt road just off Highway 7. The cache is about 30 yards off the road.
The Historic town of Sumpter Oregon began in 1861 when Gold was first discovered in the Burnt River and then in Sumpter about a year later. The gold in Sumpter was discovered by five confederate soldiers who founded Ft. Sumter, later called Sumpter after adding the letter “P” to the name. Gold is still mined from the same gold vein.
The gold dredge located in Sumpter is one of the only man made objects that can be seen from space. In the town of Sumpter there is a huge flea market Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day weekend. Lots of fun for the whole family.
Another attraction of this area is the Sumpter Valley Railway. The Railway was started in 1890. It ran between Baker City and Prairie City, Oregon a strech of about 80 miles. The Sumpter Valley Railway was made a narrow-guage railroad so that it could travel the sharp curves and even used switchbacks to get over steep passes shortening the travel distance without tunneling. The railway was used for logging and mining and was shut down in 1961.
This cache was placed in loving memory of Brad Rodabaugh a great friend and loving father.
