F.T.F.- Wounded Knee!
Medium Lock n Lock Near Old Fairmont Christian Church
We had a great time placing this one. 4x4 is recommended to drive
to the bottom of Fairmont Hill otherwise park just off of Quicks
Run and enjoy the walk up. We sorta had to do just that after
testing the depth of one of the mud holes with my 4x2 Expedition.
See images for a chuckle and thanks again to Mike for the use of
his tractor! There are so many interesting places to see in Lewis
County! Here is a little history behind the Fairmont Christian
Church summarized from an article by local historian Dr. William M
Talley: The existing church was believed to have been built around
1902. It is likely that an earlier building stood on the site as
early as 1876. The surrounding cemetery is unfortunately in
disrepair but there are a few Civil War veterans (both Rebel and
Union) buried there. Many of the graves have death dates as far
back as 1879. The location was chosen as a half-way point between
the communities of Carrs and Martin's Fork who shared the church.
When the church bell was rung it could be heard for miles on either
side of the hill. It's hard to believe now but the old road it was
built on leading up Martin's Fork was once the main road between
Quicks Run and Carrs before the current Quicks Run road was built.
Gradually, the older road over Fairmont Hill became neglected and
finally abandoned. It makes for an enjoyable walk and the site
itself is very interesting. Hope you enjoy the cache! P.S. The hint
below is a dead give away.
