Hannah was standing outside of
Principal Archimedes’s office away from her desk in the
reception area, when the rest of the staff was at lunch. It
was the last day of the school year, and the front office was
closing for the next two weeks. She peeked in the principal’s
office to ask him a question about his summer plans, but the
room was empty. His polished walnut desk was in the center of
room, with one piece of paper sitting on top of
it.
Hannah’s curiosity got the better of her,
so she took a quick look over her shoulder and entered the room.
With Principal Archimedes, you could be sure whatever he had left
out like that would be interesting.
She looked down at the paper quickly, and
then longer. It was some kind of picture, maybe, but the garbled
text that swirled around the faded figures in the background made
no sense at all. Reluctantly, Hannnah discarded any notions of
learning more about her mysterious boss's summer plans. She put the
paper back on the desk and hastily left the room.
As she was sitting back down at her desk,
Principal Archimedes returned through the double glass doors, and
said hello as he passed by Hannah's desk. He went back into his
office, and immediately noticed that the piece of paper on his desk
was slightly askew. He automatically repositioned it as he walked
over to the antique mirror on the opposite wall.
With a twinkle in his eyes, Principal
Archimedes smiled and winked at his own reflection while he
straightened his tie and contemplated his summer
plans.
