This is our first cache so good luck to everyone who tries it. The Cache is situated on the south side of Brandon Woods just outside Coventry. I have permission from The Friends of Brandon Wood to place the Cache
Brandon Wood lies about 6 km east of Coventry and covers a total area of 178 acres. It was quoted in the Doomsday Book as woodland in 1086 and is now designated Replanted Ancient Woodland. The northern boundary bank with its 18ft freeboard and double ditch is evidence of its antiquity. After the Second World War, most oak trees were clear- felled and replaced by conifer plantations. In the early 1970s sand and gravel extraction and subsequent landfill also changed the character of the wood. Since 1981 it has been maintained and improved by voluntary workers from Friends of Brandon Wood, a registered charity and is now reverting to natural broad leaved woodland. Nationally, it is the first designated community woodland and was purchased from the Forestry Commission in 2000 by The Friends and is managed by the Trustees. Brandon Wood will remain in the hands of the community in perpetuity.
The wood is accessible from Binley Woods at N52 23.406 W001 24.881, but this is in a residential setting and care should be taken to avoid any nuisance to the residents. Please do not park at Brandon Wood Farm there is no access to the cache from there. There is an extensive network of footpaths just follow the most likely path to reach the cache. It is not advisable to wear shorts as there are nettles both side of the paths and can get a little overgrown in summer.
