Geocache Description:

From the parking area, this cache will take you on a tour of the meadow.

Lake Tahoe was in the middle of the two main artries of the mass migration West in the Gold Rush days. In 1848 John C. "Cockeye" Johnson first explored the South side of Lake Tahoe. In 1851 Martin Smith was the first white settler in the area and by 1852, some emigrant traffic began passing thru the area.

The Pioneer Trail became the route of the Pony Express and in the 1860s lots of people and animals began moving thru this area.

At one point the meadow had holding pens (you might see some of the posts still standing between here and Hwy 50) for livestock and was also the location of the first airport in the area.

When you are between waypoints two and three stop and be really quiet you might still hear the theme from the television series Bonanza. This meadow is the one in the opening scene.

We chased lady luck, 'til we finally struck Bonanza!
With a gun and a rope and a hat full of hope, planted a family tree. We got hold of a pot of gold, Bonanza!
With a horse and a saddle, and a range full of cattle, how rich can a fellow be?

Lyrics written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans.
