Geocache Description:

History

The Imperial Ballroom was one of the top pop venues in East Lancashire in the 1960s and 70s.

The building dated from 1911. Originally it was a roller skating rink but in 1925 became a municipal hall.

A local historian has documented the history of the Imperial Ballroom. The book, "The Ballroom of the Stars" contains photographs of rock and pop legends, autographs, rare documents and insights into the venue. Top bands ranging from the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix to T-Rex and Fleetwood Mac played in the Carr Road club. He states: "My contention is that Beatlemania was spawned at the Imp. Nowhere was it greater than at the Imp, which, as usual seemed to be in the eye of the hurricane."

Sadly, the club met its demise on March 18, 1976 in a fire. The site is now occupied by a group of residential flats called Imperial Gardens, in memory of the Imp.

The cache is a magnetic container. Take care it is in view of nearby residences.

Good luck.
