Geocache Description:

This is where the Old Fish Traps were at on the Spit.

The Alaska commercial salmon fishery grew up with the new territory beginning in about 1900 and was its economic backbone until World War II. As new canneries were developed throughout coastal Alaska, entrepreneurs realized that they could catch huge amounts of fish in their own large stationary traps, rather using their own boats. Almost immediately, however, local natives, Pioneers, and boat fishermen decided that the commercial fish trap was too efficient for their own welfare. Thus an increasingly pitched political battle raged for 50yr between residents and nonresidents, between labor and capital, and between local fishermen and distant federal bureaucrats. Opposition to the hated fish trap provided the political fuel for the statehood movement, and the new State of Alaska banned the trap as part of its constitution in 1959.
There is a parking spot across the HWY. Park there and walk back up to the road and cross the road, jump the rail and be carefull jumping around on the boulders. The cord are great I checked them 5 times. The cache is a plastic container. every thing in side is double sealed so please seal both bags back up.PLEASE cover the container back up with the med. size rocks that are over it so it dose not get washed away in High tides or stormy days. I might disable this cache come September/October depending on if it gets damaged. I wanted to place this here so you had a chance to get a little closer to the Old Fish Traps Pilings .The Pilings are not always visible at high tides. FTF there is an AK pin in there are take what ever you want.
