This a pleasant drive southeast of Ashland Montana. Cache is located in Custer National Forest at Stag Rock on the Fort Howe's Road. If you want to continue on the road it becomes a maintained gravel road which ends up at the Decker Coal mine north of Sheridan Wyoming.
Take Highway 212 east of Ashland, Montana for about 4 -5 miles, then turn South on the Fort Howes Road.(Also known as Otter Creek Road and State Highway 484) Stag Rock is located 17.5 miles south on the Fort Howe's Road. The Fort Howe's Road is paved and well marked.
You can park in a pullout area just North of the Rock and walk to the base of the rock. The cache is located entirely on Forest Service land, so access is not a problem. The only problems are ticks, cacti, and range cows. For those of you unfamiliar with this area, there is an identification sign for Stag Rock immediately east of the rock which can be seen from the highway. The container is a 1/2 gallon plastic container with a wide mouth lid. Contents include the usual log with pencil, a 1995 Canadian quarter, various auto fuses, a small bungee cord, and, for the first person to find the cache, a gen-u-ine Colorado Rockies baseball with the Rockies logo. The terrain is fairly steep walking from the parking area up to where the cache is located.
AND, for a bonus there is a US Dept Of Commerce benchmark located immediately east of Stag rock. Coordinates are N 45 19.301, W 106 09.410.
