Geocache Description:

Between 1836 and 1890 Windsor, Nova Scotia was the third largest port in Canada. Only Montreal and Saint John were larger with respect to goods shipped. Windsor was also a world renowned ship building centre. Two of the major ship builders in this area during the 1800s were Bennett Smith and Shubael Dimock. Smith launched his last vessel, the “Black Watch” in 1877, while Dimock launched his last schooner, the “Uruguay” in 1891.

The best place to park for this cache is at the Windsor Tourist Bureau. The coordinates listed above bring you to an information plaque that includes details on what the Port of Windsor and the local ship building industry were like historically. Read the information carefully, as you will need to draw from it in order to continue.

The coordinates for the final cache location are:

N 45° 00.0AB W 064° 07.CDE

AB = the number of vessels that Bennett Smith built x 2.
CDE = the number of tons that the Uruguay weighed plus the number of masts that it had.

Once you have done the calculations, take a leisurely walk along the waterfront to get to the final cache location. Your journey will bring you to a view of what remains of the old wharf that once serviced the Colonial Fertilizer Company.
The cache is a cammoed 1 kg. peanut butter jar containing some nautical themed swag along with a log book, stash note, pencils, etc. As well, there is a FTF prize that any sailor can use to buy some java while they are in port. Please try to keep within the nautical theme when making your trades.

Some areas of the shoreline could be a bit muddy, so be sure to wear the appropriate footwear. As well, this hike may not be available during high tide, so please plan accordingly. You can check tide times for the area by going to DFO's website (visit link) and clicking on Hantsport.

Thank you to Mayor Anna Allen and the Windsor Town Council for allowing this cache to be placed.
