Geocache Description:

A small geocache hidden along a once much used footpath close to the start of a ferry across the Axe....

This cache is hidden very close to the site of a long since gone ferry. According to Uphill history information, a Roman temple and fort was built on Brean Down and it seems likely to be the reason that a ferry service was first instituted in Roman times to cross the River Axe from Brean Down to Uphill. It continued in use to 1995. The earliest map we could find with the ferry on was dated 1931, but it is still shown on the 1993 OS map.

Today's OS maps show the footpath going across the river, however the route is impassable due to the mud, and under no circumstances should the cache be approached from the Uphill side of the river.
