Geocache Description:

It is told that round about 1800 two gentlemen desirous of enclosing a large tract of the Moor for their own profit hired a gang of Irish labourers to build the necessary walls. The local folk viewed the project with dismay for it would severely affect their right to graze their own stock on the open moor. But a gang of tough Irishmen who so scorned the hardships of the terrain as to go to work barefooted would call for planned and concerted action if their schemes were to be thwarted.
The men of Okehampton and Belstone therefore got together and laid plans. One night, when the Irishman’s wall was nearing completion, they turned out in force, and armed with stout poles threw down enough of the wall to render it useless. The two gentlemen took the hint and paid off their labourers who quietly disappeared from the story.
The map shows that the wall runs from the Taw up over Belstone Hill and down almost to the East Okement, a distance of over 1,000 yards.
