Geocache Description:

During one of our walks along the beach a little while ago, we were surprised to stumble across an ammo can, up on the bank, in under the trees. We thought this to be rather odd, since at that time, there were no regular caches listed for the area. When we investigated further, we discovered that what looked like an ordinary ammo can on the outside, was actually a time machine on the inside! As well as an electronic control panel, it also contained a small transporter chamber, or what some people commonly refer to as a “transportulator”! The dial on the control panel could be set to go back in time anywhere from 50 ya (years ago), all the way to 500 mya (million years ago). It appeared that this particular time machine was designed to bring back different artifacts from different historical eras. In fact the chamber already contained a variety of items including fossil horn corals from 350 million years ago, old coins and stamps, and from more recent history, a few small red rose tea pot figurines.

At this point, we decided to share our unique discovery with fellow cachers. We added an “Official Geocache” sticker to the outside of the ammo can, and a log book, stash note, pencils and FTF prize to the inside.

The best place to park is at the Avondale (Newport Landing) wharf (N 45° 01.299 W 064° 07.906). When you are walking to the cache location, you may actually feel like you are going back in time yourself. First you will pass by the old site of the Harvie and Mosher Shipyards from over a hundred years ago (the present location of the Avon River Heritage Society Museum), and then by the remains of a plane wreck from the 1980s (N 45° 01.471 W 064° 07.846). Immediately to the water side of the wreck, you can see the remnants of the old “King’s Wharf” at low tide, which was historically the unloading site for the many railroad cars that once carried gypsum to this area. Further along still, you will pass by a 340 million year old fossil reef (see the earthcache listing for “Coquina Reef” – GC143A0).

Some areas of the shoreline are quite muddy, so be sure to wear the appropriate footwear. Please pay very close attention to your children while in this area, as there are sink holes here. What might appear to be just a small puddle or pond, may in fact be a very deep hole! This hike may not be available during high tide, so plan accordingly. You can check tide times for the area by going to DFO's website (visit link) and clicking on Hantsport.

If you would like to take an item from the transporter chamber when you visit the cache, please leave something in trade that comes from the past. It is best to turn the chamber upside down before opening it to ensure that you do not lose any of the artifacts that are found inside. We ask that you DO NOT PLACE ANY FOSSILS FROM THE NEARBY EARTHCACHE IN THIS CACHE. Of course, no one should take the transporter chamber itself, as this would certainly affect the time machine’s ability to function properly! As well, before leaving, please remember to set the time travel dial to a time period of your choosing, and then hold down the start button for a second or two. This will send the machine back in time, enabling it to retrieve another artifact for the next cacher to find.

We hope you enjoy this discovery as much as we did. (We even found a couple of red rose teapot figurines in the transporter chamber that might be of interest to Ducky and the 3-Bearss!)

NOTE FROM CURRENT CACHE OWNER: Hello everyone. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to do much along the lines of driving and hiking. As a result, some of my caches have already been adopted. The remaining geoadventurers geocaches, including this one, are all up for adoption.
