Information from a plaque near the gazebo reads: Park Row
was the first road around this green mall in Brunswick and was
built to avoid what was once an alder swamp. Later on Maine Street
was built on the West side. In 1823, this land was conveyed to the
town by three citizens for five cents. They wanted the land to be
reserved and used as a public walk or mall. Soon after this the
swamp was drained and filled, and in 1872 Brunswick selectmen
expressed hope that the mall would "become a point to which people
will gravitate for rest and recreation during the heat of the
summer."
This cache is being placed initially as part of a
geocaching course. It is a traditional cache meant to be a good
hunt for kids. Please replace as found; although this is a high
muggle area, I think the cache can remain undetected with
care.
Dawn to dusk only,
please.
