Geocache Description:

This cache is easily accessible along River Avenue in Emlenton, PA. You’re looking for a 1 quart Ziploc storage container and will need to bring your own pen for signing the log book. Some stealth may be required.

Take a break from your I-80 travels and visit the “Town Under the Bridge”. Once you have found the cache, feel free to kick back and soak in the scenery for a bit.

The cache spot offers a unique view of the Interstate 80 Bridge over the Allegheny which dominates the landscape to the East. This High-Level Cantilever Steel Deck Truss Bridge was built 40 years ago and at the time was the highest bridge east of the Mississippi. At 270’ above the river and nearly 1700’ long this marvel of engineering touches 3 counties!

To the south of the cache area, across the tranquil river, you will see a picturesque wooded hillside. This land was deeded to the Borough of Emlenton by the Crawford Family (see “Grand Old Man of Oil” GCH9VZ) with the stipulation that, with the exception of limited timber for maintenance purposes, it never be developed. Emlenton's most famous family wanted to ensure that the scenic view be preserved for the citizens of their beloved hometown.

The house across the street from the cache area is where I spent my mid-20s, living in a 1st floor apartment at the Bed & Breakfast. As a young songwriter, a vast majority of my music was written on the side porch of this house and was born “of the river”. This setting I hold dear and it brings serenity when I’m able to return to soak in the surroundings of this place that I still think of as home.

I hope you have enjoyed your stop. Feel free to return anytime.
