Nomex: Hi
As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm temporarily archiving this to keep it from continually showing up in search lists. Just contact us when you have the cache repaired, [RED]and assuming it still meets the guidelines[/RED], we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Don't hesitate to email me via the link on my Profile if you have any questions. [red]Please be sure to include the cache name and GC Code, or better yet, the URL of the cache page.[/red]

Geocache Description:

This is an easy cache meant to show off some of the changes as Fort Ord is converted to civilian and university use. There are many excellent caches to be found throughout the old Army base.

Note: Two years ago, Griffin’s Lair was geomuggled (vandalized, stolen, removed). I replaced it two times. All three caches were taken, ammo boxes and all. There were apparently some folks who were not playing the game, as I did not make a note of the replacements and other vandalism occurred in the area. After discussing the problem with a few other cache placers/owners, Golden Gate University, and security folks, we decided to wait a year or so to replace the cache. The year is up (July 2007), we still have permission to place the cache on university property, and the vandalism and littering in the area has subsided. I apologize for not having the cache available during this time, but, now it’s back. Thank you!

Welcome to Griffin’s Lair: The Griffin, with the body of a lion and the wings & head of an eagle, has the properties of a guardian, signifying magnanimity & valor. From 1917 to 1994, the US Army’s Fort Ord, California, contributed significantly to the defense of the nation. With the 7th Infantry Division (Light), it was the core of the nation’s Rapid Deployment Force. Today, the proud, distinguished Army base is converting to civilian use, notably including several universities. Amongst these is the Griffin’s Lair, for the Griffin is the symbol of Golden Gate University (GGU). GGU was founded in 1901 in San Francisco. It has thrived with a campus in Monterey for over 30 years. Today, Fort Ord is a model of the conversion process. The Griffin’s Lair is a key player in the new history of Fort Ord.

Following Items are in Griffin’s Lair when replaced: Log Book and pens. Geocache site card. Welcome to Griffin’s Lair card. Geocaching trail etiquette card. RadioFest iron-on patch. Pair-o-dice. New stapler. GGU Griffin stick-on. Two Carabiner 3-ring keyrings. New deck of tactical field playing cards. Clip-on LED book light. A squad of toy soldiers. Several trade toys.

I hope you enjoy the area and all the activity as old Fort Ord becomes a number of new communities, housing areas, schools, universities, and other modern facilities.
Take good care, WestLog Rick ;-)
