History of the area: It is unclear exactly
when it became a resort, but in 1883, John Southgate bought his
72-acre farm at "Bay Park" so it must have been going by the name
Bay Park at that time. It was never incorporated as a village. Many
homes in the park were built in Sebewaing, and brought across the
ice in the winter, and others were "kit homes" from Sears and
Roebuck.
By 1908 Thomas Fisheries had begun in the
park, along with a bait shop. There was also a bait shop with
groceries and a pool table on the corner of Bay Park and Vassar
Roads. The Bay Park General Store and Hotel (N 43 39.325, W083
35.287) supplied ice, food, and gasoline to people living in the
park. The upstairs of the store had eight bedrooms. It operated as
a store until about 1960, where it became a private
residence.
The cache is not big enough to hold trade
items. It is just big enough for the log sheet. So you will need to
bring your own pen or pencil to sign the sheet.
PLEASE put the container back exactly where you found it.
Thank you.
