Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of caches in and around the town of Wallingford. The well known crime writer Agatha Christie owned a house in the town and spent her later years there. All the caches in this series are named after her books.

In order to find this cache you will have to solve 13 problems. They are all much more straightforward than the ones Miss Marple solved in this book. The answers to these 13 problems can be found as you take a stroll around the village of Ewelme – a couple of miles from Wallingford. The co-ordinates above are for the start-point/parking place.

Our starting place is the 15th century school (teas served on the second Sunday in April, May, June, July and September – 2.30-5.00) founded by Alice and William de la Pole. William was Earl of Suffolk and married Alice, granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer in 1430.

Problem 1: Find the shields on the school wall. One of them shows the coming together of the two families – the leopard faces of the de la Pole family and the lion of Alice’s other grandfather Sir John Burghersh, Lord of the Manor of Ewelme. How many leopards are on this shield? (A)

Now move to N51 37.050 W001 04.104 and from there, enter ‘God’s house in Ewelme’. These are the Almshouses founded just after the school.

Problem 2: How many numbered doors are there around the courtyard? (B)
Problem 3: What is the total of all these numbers? (C)

Climb the steps on the east side of the Almshouses. This will take you into the church (open during daylight hours) or you can turn right to go into the churchyard. If you do go into the church you will find the tomb of Alice, Duchess of Suffolk. The south door of the church leads into the churchyard. Now find three tombs at N51 37.055 W001 04.043

Problem 4: Four members of the Jerome family are buried here including the author of “Three Men in a Boat”. What is the sum of the ages of the oldest and the youngest? (D)

Leave the churchyard via the gate leading onto Parson’s Lane and down into the main part of the village. Like most of the village, this road has no footpath, so please be careful! You need to find ‘The Pound’ at N51 37.175 W001 04.231

Problem 5: What is the total of the digits on the notice? (E)
Now make your way to N51 37.137 W001 04.246 and King’s Pool. Here Henry VIII is reputed to have bathed his feet and into which some say he was thrown for chasing the local girls!

Problem 6: How many seats were presented by the Ewelme Home Guard? (F)

From here make your way to N51 37.158 W001 04.292

Problem 7: How old was the ‘Founder of God’s House and School’ when she died? (G)
Problem 8: What is the sum of the digits on the largest bell? (H)

Now walk on to N51 37.332 W001 04.736. As you go – in different places and when you get there - you will need to find the answers to these problems ...

Problem 9: On what date in July 2004 was the Duke of Kent here? (I)
Problem 10: How many pounds reward is the yellow sign offering? (J)
Problem 11: How many species of birds seen here are on the Red List? (K)
Problem 12: In what year did the watercress business close down. Add the digits in that year to get (L)

Problem 13: How do you pronounce ‘Ewelme’?
To find the answer find the cache which is located at N51 M.N W001.R.S where

M = 2E + (F - A)
N = P x Q
P = H / J
Q = B - F
R = (C + F) / I
S = (D + G + 2K + L) x J

The cache is on a permissive footpath. Having located the cache you can continue along the footpath then right onto public footpath which leads back to your parking-place.
