Geocache Description:

Nine miles from Big Bear on Forest Service Road (FSR)2N10. The FSR is dirt but in good shape. The altitude is approximately 7800 ft. The hiking component of this trip is only 1/4 mile long.

This is a theme cache: Outdoor/Camping cache. Please replace itmes with outdoor and camping items as well. This cache also houses the "Odd Ball" (hence the name). The "Odd Ball" is a stuffed dalmation puppy who we found in Nevada at the "Honeymoon by the Brooke Cache". We have relocated him to Sunny Southern California. If you find him, please help him continue his journey. He would like to head to Utah or Colorado, returning to the sister cache "The Oak Angel" within 9-12 months (Angeles Oaks, CA). The Odd Ball at Grand View is an excellent cache which we recommend with what we call the "Triple Challenge". The "Triple Callenge" includes: The "Odd Ball Cache at Grandview", "Beyond Castle Rock" and "Wishes it Were a Champion Lodgepole". All three of these caches can be accessed from FSR 2N10. Each has its own unique and beautiful scenery and views. If you wish to make it a "Quadruple Challenge" then we also recommend the "Excellent View Cache" (need I say more?).

Cache Contents:

  • Emergency Hooded Poncho
  • Mini-pocket knife
  • 2-N-1 salt & pepper shakers (camping)
  • Personal Pack- Toilet Seat Covers (you just never know)
  • Pin-on Compass
  • Brass Match Box (no more soggy matches)
  • Mini Multi-tool
  • Panda Bear (okay, so we diverged slightly from our theme)
  • 4 cans of Play-Doh (we hope that the bears cannot smell them). All in a large green rectangular container.

The trailhead can be either assessed by car or mtn. bike (we have done both). You will pass the "pine plantation" prior to reaching the trail head which is at the point where the 2N10 and 2N08 merge. From the parking/trail head to the cache is approxiamtely 1/4 mile of easy walking. Once you reach the coordinants of NN34* 12.794 / W116* 55.421 (.2 miles from the trail head), head NE towards the cache. Look for a rock formation and a gnarled deadfall. You owe it to yourself to continue up the Grand View trail for a spectacular view of Gray Back (San Gorgonio Mtn) and the valley floor [N34* 12.701 / W116* 55.426, elevation 7700].
