A beautiful hike through a farmers field to a stunning wooded peninsula and it's cliffs edge trail leading to a world-class vista and hide.
This was our first GeoCache hide way back in 2007 and the spot we found could not be more spectacular: the far tip of Howe Point, a wooded penninsula on the south shore of Prince Edward Island. The cache is at the far end of beautiful winding trail. This is geocaching at it's very best: an amazing hike, stunning views, hidden vistas and a magical trail, all on public land.
Drive along PEI Route 310 then follow Howe Point Road until the penninsula narrows. You will eventually see water on both sides then the road will turn to dirt just before turning into the last field on the peninsula where a modernist home has been built on a lot carved off the larger field ahead. That field is where you're headed but to get there you have to back track slightly. The homeowners are cool but to get around the house and respect their privacy simply back up about 100 feet and park along the dirt road just before the tree line begins on the left. Hike along the farmers lane towards the water with the tree line on your right and a field to your left. Halfway down the tractor path will cut to the right through the woods back into the field beyond. Follow the path back into the last field where the modernist home stands now to your right. Hug the tree line to your left and follow it around the field deep into the far left corner of the field until you come to a cliff top scenic outlook. The trail loop begins a little bit further along the cliffs edge.
This is the sort of description that sounds complicated until you arrive and it will all make sense...
The first fifty yards or so of the trail winds through dense raspberry plants but the going quickly improves. There are numerous scenic outlooks as the trail safely winds along through the woods and near the cliffs edge. At the very tip to the East you'll see Inukshuk point below. Continue 50 yards further and you'll pass a small side trail leading to the hiding spot and another awesome view now facing South West. The trail then loops around to the other side of the peninsula before returning between the tree line and the farmers field to the first outlook. Figure 1 hour round trip from the car.
As of July 2014 the trail is trimmed and ready and all the winter blow downs have been removed. As of July 2015 the actual GeoCache has gone missing and part of the peninsula tip has eroded. The hike remains spectacular but the hide is suspended temporarily...
The Google map on this page accurately places the cache at the very end of the peninsula shown!
