Geocache Description:

This is one of three caches placed in Carlisle's Scotch Ridge Center, a newly developing recreational area with mowed grass and dirt trails.

This cache is placed along the North River, in the Scotch Ridge Center, just south of Carlisle off of Highway 5.

The Scotch Ridge Center is a public park organized and maintained by volunteers to restore a remnant Ox-Bow, the Mesic Prairie and Prairie Potholes to replicate what the landscape may have been in ancient times. We will never know what the environment was really like because ancient Oneonta Indians modified the landscape for thousands of years before the European settlers arrived.

The historic North River crossing near this cache has been used by people for 10,000 years or more. Artifacts from the native Americans have been found in the cultivated field just west of the cache site. The more recent history of the European settlers reveal that the rock bottom crossing near the cache was the favorite place to go after church on a summer Sunday to wet your feet and cool off. The neighbors all did the same thing and as a result a prominent meeting place was created.

The old road ran south along the east bank of the river where the modern Highway 5 bridge is now, and then crossed at the rock bottom, climbing up the west bank to the edge of the tree line along the edge of the existing cultivated field, then north back to where the modern bridge stands today.

The organizing committee has given permission to hide this cache here. As you enter the property, you may open the gate...it's closed only with a chain...and park near the shade tree or drive south to the covered picnic table and have a picnic before or after grabbing this one and the other two Carlisle caches (Carlisle's Trojan Duck Cache and the Carlisle's Past Cache) in the Center. Remember to close the gate when you leave.
