Citadel One
This is the first of the "Citadel" series of caches. The common theme of these caches is that they are placed on or at the summit of mountains or structures which resemble a citadel, fortress or castle. A dramatic appearance is key.
The series is open-ended; that is, there are no predetermined number of caches and they can be found in any order.
I plan to add several more to the series, and invite all cachers to contribute by creating and listing their own caches with the Citadel name - just pick the next number in the sequence. If you do publish an addition, please let me know, and I will add links to it from others in the series.
The hike to Citadel One will take you off the well-beaten Mill D trail and into some very remote areas. If this peak has a name, I'm not aware of it - please post a note if you know of an official name. The peak is not visible from the trail. In order to view it, you would have to ascend the opposite ridge a ways.
I left the trail at N 40 39.415 W 111 37.796 and hiked to the ridge to the left of the peak. There is no trail after leaving Mill D, so be prepared for some bushwhacking. Long pants might be much appreciated. The ascent is quite pleasant and not very overgrown, but it is steep.
This is a fairly difficult hike into remote areas. Please do not attempt it if you are uncomfortable with these conditions.
From the summit, you will see that several loop routes are possible. It is not necessary to return the same way.
The cache is at the summit. It is a camouflage-painted match tube. The summit elevation is 9,675 feet.
Enjoy the hike and be careful! See the Gallery for more images from the hike:
