At the western peak of Gråberghaugen, 631 meters above sea level.
The eastern peak is close and easily accessible, with stunning
scenery on the way.
Like grey sentinels, the twin tops of Gråberghaugen overlook the
lakes of Heggelivannet and large parts of Krokskogen - Norway's
famous fairy tale forests. In fact, the king of fairy tale ripoffs,
Peter Christian Asbjørnsen , passed right under these hills on his
eventful hike that later produced "A summer night in Krokskogen",
his best known short story.
However, it is improbable that he made it up to this remote ridge,
which is crowned by two summits. Walking between them, you'll have
a fairy-tale like experience of nordic melancholy scenery when the
treetops fall away and the view unfolds before you.
While you're here, I strongly recommend a visit to
the PPJ cache in the vicinity.
The cache is a military-style metal container, secured with green
camo wire and a black carabiner. It contains logbook, pens, a
pencil, info sheet, an Estonian fear chaser, golden carabiners,
quite few moose droppings and some dubious CDs. It also contains
the Norwegian geocoin "Markoman". which only wants to travel
between caches in Oslomarka (the hills above Oslo).
Good starting points include Skansebakken and Damtjern. In both
cases, you have quite a journey to Vakerseter, which is an obvious
point to start your assault on the grey sentinels. From here, the
landscape rises gradually through pristine forest to the summits.
If you like to climb, a shorter and more brutal ascent starts from
the highest point of the road at the foot of the hills.
