This cache is located just off the Perseverance Trail.
The damp Alaskan climate has been hard on the organic relics from this period in history but there are still many ruins and artifacts of the mining operations scattered throughout the valley and along the trail. This cache is located near some of those relics.
Tlingits originally established the trail for hunting mountain goats and gathering berries; later it became an access road for five major gold mining operations in the Gold Creek Valley. The Johnson Road (Perseverance Trail) is considered the first road of any size in Alaska. During the late 1800s and early 1900s the valley was home to a prosperous gold town with a hospital, cottages, apartments, a blacksmith shop and post office. Some sources suggest that the first telephone line in Alaska linked the mining community in Silverbow basin with the city of Juneau. For people visiting from out of town this cache is a very pleasant hour to hour and a half walk (round trip) from the cruise ship docks. Continuing up the Perseverance Trail beyond the cache will take you to breathtaking views, an impressive waterfall and if you go far enough a pretty subalpine basin.
