Geocache Description:

Dr. Gulick was a national figure, “a brilliant man of many ideas, of great enthusiasm and persuasive ability…in demand as a speaker and a writer and as chairman of executive boards and organization committees.” He designed the symbol used by the YMCA. The game of basketball grew out of an idea he gave to one of his students, James Naismith. He served twice on the Olympic Games Committee. He spent hours serving on the committee which laid out the foundation plans for the Boy Scouts of America. He then turned his focus and attention to the girls of America. Camp Fire Girls were created as the first non-sectarian organization for girls in the United States. Their activities at that time embraced both the household and camping – fire building, cooking, bed making, sewing, singing, and folk dancing. Charlotte Gulick found that their most successful summer programs at their camp were theme-based. After consultation with Ernest Thompson Seton, Mrs. Gulick decided that Indian lore and ceremonial were to permeate the program and remain a large part of today’s ceremonies as well. In 1975, Camp Fire expanded its programs to include boys. In 1992, the organization changed its name to Camp Fire Boys and Girls to emphasize the organization's new coed focus. In 2001, the organization evolved again, changing its name to Camp Fire USA and modernizing its logo and image to appeal to the kids of today. Camp Fire USA currently serves more than 750,000 boys and girls nationwide. How much history do you know about Camp Fire USA?
