Location: Medicine Bow Peak Summit
Elevation: 12,013 ft.
There are multiple ways to approach this cache. Please note that each route differs in distance, terrain and elevation but destination is the same. All trails are well marked. For shortest route use the Sugarloaf Trailhead to the peak (4-mile hike round-trip). Sugarloaf parking lot fills up quickly and requires a parking fee. Leaving early in the day will make for a more solitary trip.
Be sure to wear good foot gear for this hike. Lots of boulders at the top. Use caution. The spectacular views at the top should be the center of focus, not spending a lot of time searching for this cache. Therefore, picture clues are included for an easy find after such hard work reaching the summit.
Cache is located less than 10 feet off the "trail" up top. And the view will be the backside facing Elk Mountain, green valleys and lakes instead of the traditional view of the range.
Additionally, there is a BENCHMARK (triangulation station disk - MP0546 Medicine Bow)at the top that can be logged on geocaching.com as well. The benchmark disk is very easy to find and has seen better days.
Remember to use common sense hiking protocol before venturing out on this find. For example, DO NOT start the trail after 3:00 p.m. as weather at the top can be very dangerous in the afternoons. High exposed areas such as this should be avoided during thunderstorms.
