Park near the cemetery gate at N 33 35.374 W 97 39.118 MALLARD, TEXAS. Mallard is on Farm Road 455 five miles southeast of Montague in southeastern Montague County. It was named for A. M. Mallard, a rancher who established his headquarters near the present townsite. Mallard received a post office in 1892, which served the community until 1915. By the mid-1930s the town had 115 persons and one business. No doubt affected by such events as the agricultural depression of the 1920s and 1930s, the Great Depression, and the dislocations caused by World War II. Mallard's population fell by the late 1940s to fifty, a number reported consistently throughout the following decade. The most recent population statistics, those for 1967, indicate that twenty persons lived in Mallard at that time. By 2000 the population was listed as twelve. Brian Hart (Handbook of Texas Online) This cache is located in the cemtery that is just about all that remains of this Texas pioneer community. At one time, there were three churches, a school, a store, and many citizens. All of that is a memory now. The earliest inscribed headstone that we could find here was from 1888. The latest 2006. (There are several graves marked by undated markers only, though). My family's homeplace was here in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and many ancestors are buried here. My grandfather ran the store for many years until it burned down. My great aunt taught at the school. While you're here for the cache, spend some time walking among the gravestones of these pioneers. They were made of hearty stock, and had to overcome the many dangers and challenges of pioneer life. Cache is a green ammo can. Cache starts with a carabiner flashlight, compass, Sci-Fi book, Star Trek patches, and a wonderful selection of other geoswag, in addition to three geocoins. Please be respectfully reverent, since this is a special place. Please leave things the way you found them and CITO. Also, this place is known to host chiggers, ticks, and the occasional snake, so please use insecticide and be careful.
