Geocache Description:

Another view of Penfield Pond and Putts Creek that is not often seen. Take a short stroll up a footpath and take in the sounds and scenery of an almost forgotten spot that once was busy with industry.

Park on Peasley Road just before the bridge: 43 55.358, 73 31.930. Cross the bridge, look right for a trail heading along the creek. Or park at the Penfield Museum 43 55.361 73 32.137 and walk a few 100 yards to the bridge. Follow the footpath. The heavy canopy of trees is what makes this cache a challenge. This is a traditional cache in an ammo box with goodies that a cacher may find useful. Don't forget to take a few side trips to see the creek and pond, but be careful!

After finding the cache take some time to explore the nearby Penfield Museum in Ironville, NY. It is a real treasure!

In December of 1974, the entire hamlet of Ironville was designated the Ironville Historic District and was entered into the National Register of Historic Places. The property totals 550 acres, including the Homestead, the parsonage, the church, the former Penfield farm and barns, the mill pond, and the site of the Crown Point Iron Company’s iron works along Putnam Creek. The Penfield Museum on Corduroy Road is a 19th-century homestead built in 1828 when Allen Penfield moved his family to Crown Point from Pittsford, Vt., to enter the growing iron industry. Several rooms in the homestead are furnished with original pieces once belonging to the Penfield's as well as exhibits on life in Ironville during the 19th century, from the iron industry to Crown Point during the Civil War to household equipment. The mission of the museum is to preserve and protect the historic landscape, hamlet, and homestead associated with the early nineteenth century iron-working history of the Crown Point Ironworks. Maps for walking tours of the hamlet are available at the museum and feature 10 stations that outline the region's once-thriving iron industry. The museum is generally open weekends June through Columbus Day weekend and by appointment. Admission: $4 adults $2 children. Call 597-3804 for more information. (Note: times and costs are subject to change, so you may want to check ahead of time).
