Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates, but is located within a 1 mile radius. The cache owner HIGHLY recommends a visit to Google Earth prior to attempting the final stage.

Cache will hold small tradeable items, but not a pen. Please remember to bring your own writing implement.

Magnum opus, from the Latin meaning “great work”, refers to the best, most popular, or most renowned achievement of an author, artist, or composer, and most commonly one who has contributed a very large amount of material.

In the fast-paced, modern age, the contributions of classical instrumental composers can be all but forgotten. In fact, the genius of these musical giants is oftentimes trivialized into nothing more than catchy advertisement jingles or background music.

This cache was created in an attempt to restore these majestic and beautiful works to their rightful place of honor in the modern world. Coordinates for the physical cache can be determined by solving a puzzle dedicated to the Magna Opera of musical history.

The degree values are, of course, N 40°, W 74°, but to obtain the minutes and decimal minutes, you need to play a game of “Name That Tune”. The puzzle includes brief excerpts from 10 classical masterpieces that you must identify. Songs A - E are for the North coordinates, and songs F - J are for the West coordinates. However, identifying the songs is only half the puzzle. I wonder how those songs encode the coordinates?

The puzzle may be downloaded by clicking on the following hyperlink.
