This cache is
located on the old Hope Nicola Trail. It was built in 1860 as
a pass between two conical mountains on the way to the old
Dewdney Trail. The cache is at 355 meters in elevation which
is about a 235 meter gain from the trail head.
There are two ways
to get to this cache. You can park at the Othello Tunnels
parking lot and walk through the tunnels to the trail head or
park at the end of Kettle Valley Road and walk the old KVR to
the trail. Either way is very scenic and historic.
The Othello Tunnels parking area is a pay parking lot and you may
need three hours or more if you plan on sightseeing. There are
other caches to find in this area as well.
Othello Tunnels
Cash, Cache & the CPR/KVR aka Most Expensive Mile.
If you've never been to the Tunnels before, this is a day trip
worth taking in itself. On any given day in the summer there are
many tourists, but this cache is on a less traveled trail.
The trail head is at N49.21.953, W121.22.383. This is about a 25
minute walk from the parking lot. Another way to the trail is from
the Kettle Valley Road off Kawkawa Lake Road. Take this road to the
end where there is free parking. This is the old KVR rail bed. The
walk to the trail head is about 45 minutes.
The trail head is marked with flagging tape near the beginning and
near the cache site. There are a few good view points along the way
and a cool osprey nest near the start. The hike to the cache is
about an hour.
The cache is in a cammoed plastic jar with lots of good trade
items. It is hidden in a big tree stump about 30 meters off the
trail. Look for the flagging to show you the way. GPS reception was
good in this area when the cache was placed.
