This cache has been placed
along the original rail route built in the 1880's by the Milwaukee
Road Railroad. This feeder rail line linked Wabasha, Minnesota to
the south, Cedar Falls to the north and Eau Claire to the east.
This little rail line serviced many communities, Including Durand
and Irvington on a daily, except Sunday, basis. The Milwaukee Road
provided a combination of freight and passenger service once a day.
The train made it's run despite threats of flooding, heavy snow or
massive ice build up near what is now called The Weeping Wall.
Eventually service was discontinued in the late 1960's and the Red
Cedar Trail was born. With rails giving way to progress and trails
you are now invited to explore the historic and scenic Red Cedar
State Trail.
It has been written that when the wealth of the land
was lumber, the Red Cedar River was one of the great water
highways that carried logs to a growing nation. This
14.5-mile biking and hiking trail follows the banks of the
river on an old rail road bed from Menomonie through the
historic lumber town of Downsville, to the great Chippewa
River Valley where it connects with the Chippewa River State
Trail in the Dunnville Wildlife Area. The trail is packed
limestone and a series of ten bridges which pass through a
panorama of woodlands, prairies and soaring sandstone cliffs.
Wildlife abounds, including deer, wild turkey, red fox, an
abundance of song birds and the majestic Bald
Eagle.
It
is expected that all geocachers visiting the area observe all the
user rules. These rules include, but are not limited to, bike
riders trail fee, dogs allowed on an 8' long, max., leash and
access time of 6 am to 11 pm daily.
