Finally! The elusive Floyd County version of the historical
marker commemorating Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's last
raid.
The name is a bit ironic since Prestonsburg was a stop during
the retreat portion of the raid which itself was certainly not the
most glorious of his career. One source does say that he stopped
here long enough to enjoy a cool drink and converse with some of
the ladies of the town. Another bit of irony is that this same
small park also contains a sign describing how Union General
James A. Garfield used a nearby house as his
headquarters after the Battle of Middle Creek.
Some might also find a bit of irony in the hiding spot.
