Geocache Description:

4WD drive best, but can make the rough 12 mile "road" with a good high clearance vehicle. The last section needs to be hiked/climbed. Altitude is 8,411 feet.

This cache is at a Marine helicopter crash site near the top of Toro Peak. The accident occured May 16, 1968 while practicing takeoffs and landings. Amazingly, the wreckage is in great condition ... no vandalism that I've seen.
Cache is an ammo box. I had a couple items donated from Marine friends, the best of which is a sharpshooter medal. Contents also include a GI Joe doll, toy military vehicles, unopened McDonald Hummer toys from Happy meals, misc toys, and some quarters.
With the log book, there is a disposable camera. Take a picture of yourself with the wreckage!
General directions to the area .... from hwy 74 in Garner Valley, go east past hwy 371 onto a dirt road with a brown Forest Service sign announing Santa Rosa Peak 10 miles. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition. High clearance necessary, 4WD would be best! If you need water during the accent, there is good drinking water at Santa Rosa Spring near the top. Go past the turn for Santa Rosa Peak and continue on to Toro peak. There are no road signs up here so it's advisable to have a topo map with you. Near Toro Peak you'll encounter a locked gate. Continuing on foot, you have two options: One is to keep hiking straight once the road curves left. That will take you directly to the site eventually but means more boulders and logs to climb over. The second way (easier, but longer)is to hike the road as it curves back and forth, past the strange buildings that hum until you see about a half-dozen metal posts with thick cable strung between them. At that point you are above the crash site, and if you look over the edge you can even see parts of it. If you go all the way up to the heli pad or towers, then you've hiked too far. However, a hike to the top has an awesome view so it's worth the extra time! But be careful, it's very windy at the peak.
