Geocache Description:

Off the rocky Gulkana Glacier Trail located off the Richardson Hwy, 2 - 3 miles off a gravel road. Follow the rocky stream bed trail. No need to get your feet wet (unless it's raining). Use the engineering aid to cross!

This ammo can cache is located just off the Gulkana Glacier trail. Experience an engineering aid that will help you to your destination. The cache, our first, was actually placed by our 8 yr old, Arctic-Kiddo, while we were searching for a suitable micro-cache which we later place. May require snow removal for winter-time caching.

To reach this cache, turn off the Richardson Hwy a short way past the Richardson Memorial (N63.10.925 W145.32.386). The turn-off at the Memorial turn-out is not recommended as it is steep and requires several stream crossings at the bottom. Drive past the memorial and take the next gravel road. The gravel road follows the Phelan Creek stream plain for several miles. During heavy rains, break-up and high water times, the road can be washed out or crosses small streams in places or even becomes part of the braided stream. We had no trouble in our mini-van in July and parked .25 mile from the Gulkana Gander cache along the side of the road when it became too rocky for us to continue comfortably. The rocks can be up to small boulder in size. Our SUV had no trouble driving to the end of road.

Here are the parking coordinates for a 4 wheel drive. N63.13.709 W145.28.955. You can still continue and park further up the road depending on conditions. Please be cautious however as the area is remote and cell phones are usually out of range in this area. Tow-trucks can be obtained in Paxson.

This area is used for RV parking during Arctic Man in April. There are many places to camp and the area is also used by ATVs during the summer.

Please be careful if the rocks are wet. It became rainy the day we placed the cache and the rocks and the engineering aid were slippery even with hiking boots, but my daughter had no problems with her crocs! There's lots to explore in the area. Note that small children and dogs may be adversed to the engineering aid.

Try the Gulkana Gander cache located off the road prior to the 4 wheel drive parking area. In Suspense, a micro cache is located in close proximity to this cache we placed the same day as this cache. The other cache in the area, Arctic Man Stash has not been found in several years and is located across the other fork of the creek. It's current status is unknown at this time.

Continue on the trail for another 15 min or so for a view of the Gulkana Glacier, one of 3 benchmark glaciers in the US studied to monitor glacier run-off. Presumably, the trail continues to the foot of the glacier.

The cache contains several items as well as a TB.
