Tjuka Tucka is one of many caches on the Outback Way-finder Trail - "the longest geocache trail in the world".
Tjuka Tucka cache is located near the Tjukayirla Roadhouse, owned by the Blackstone Aboriginal Community. The name Thukayirla comes from the nearby "Tugaila" rock holes.
Activity: Note the wonderful small tree near the cache. This is mulga. It is one of many acacia species that covers large areas of arid inland Australia. It is a survivor during drought conditions, has very hard wood used by Aboriginals for weapons and tools and is a nuitritous feed for animals. Aborigines used to grind the seeds into a flour to make cakes. Can you think of other uses for the mulga?
One more thing...look for the plant growing on the mulga - it is mistletoe, a parasite. This means that it obtains its water and nutrients from the host plant. It may even kill the host. Look for the beautiful red mistletoe flowers and/or fruit. Birds and humans love them. Did you know that there would be so much bush tucker in one tree?
