Revisit the storybook land of fairy tales come true!
When it first opened in 1955, the Enchanted Forest was the first theme park on the east coast and second (only to Disney Land and only by a few short weeks) in the United States. A young starry-eyed Mat Krul first visited the park in 1978 and has made many a return trips to this place since, during both its operational and not-so operational years. Some of my earliest adventures came out of this place. I still remember journeying around Mount Vesuvius in Little Toot, sliding down the Rainbow Bridge, and facing the surreal horror that was the Alice in Wonderland attraction.
In recent years the site has been stripped of its attractions, but only to have them refurbished, rebuilt to their former glory, and reestablished on display at a nearby farm. Team Mat Krul themselves have donated time scraping paint off the Little Red School House and working as volunteers at the Enchanted Forest’s 50th birthday celebration in 2005. Unfortunately, some of the larger structures at the original site have been unable to be moved and seemed doomed to remain there, decaying more and more every year. We have placed this cache in the hopes that you will pay this place a visit, see it before it is gone, and possibly even share some of your own Enchanted Forest memories in your log posting.
This traditional cache is a medium sized lock & lock container hidden at the listed coordinates. The park itself is closed and surrounded by a plethora of “No Tresspassing” signs. Please respect these signs. The cache is located in a public area and will take you just about as close to the park as you can legally get. For those of you who are curious, I have additional coordinates, which are good, legal, and safe spots that overlook the park. At North 39* 16.816 / West 076* 51.461 you can stand above the front area where Humpty Dumpty, Willie the Whale, the Rainbow Bridge, the Old Woman’s Shoe, and the Little Red School House once stood. You can still see the Circus in Central Park tent and a few other remnants. The Gingerbread House from Hansel & Gretel, Cinderella’s castle, and the Seven Dwarf’s Cottage are all still standing toward the back of the park. These sites can be seen from North 39* 16.843 / West 076* 51.450. One additional waypoint will take you to the current home of the restored attractions. An admission fee is required to see them up close but there is a nice overlook where they can be viewed for free at North 39* 14.141 / West 076* 52.571
Bring your camera and the kids as this place still boasts a few good photo ops. Please use stealth and hide exactly as found as this is a high muggle area.
***Disclaimer*** Please take responsibility for your own self. Read all ratings and attributes. If you are not comfortable attempting a particular find, please do not attempt. We here at the Mat Krul center for the study of accident and injury prevention do our best to rate and represent our caches in a truthful manner. We would never ask anyone to attempt a cache that we ourselves would not feel comfortable doing. However, different people have different levels of ability, comfort zones, and haircuts. Now the world don’t move to the beat of just one drum. What might be right for you may not be right for some. You take the good. You take the bad. You take them all and then you have the Facts of Life. So, attempt all caches at your own risk. Rock over London. Rock on Chicago.
Team Mat Krul along with Old King Cole, The Wise old Dragon, and the rest of the Enchanted Forest clan would like to congratulate TripMD and DragonsEar on being the FTF!
