This is the third cache in the series: Blue Magician's Caching Challenge. Each cache in the series will require the use of a different caching skill. This cache is set in Phantom's Cleugh in the Pentland Hills. The skill required to complete this cache is stamina.
The cache is located in Phantom's Cleugh. This is a valley in the Pentland Hills between Harbour hill to the west and Capelaw hill to the east.
The name of this valley is not, as most would expect, derived from sightings of Phantom's or other paranormal activities. I fell into this trap after a Scout Leader of mine tried to scare everyone during a night hike. I now feel rather gullible. The real story is as follows.
Phantom's Cleugh was named in honour of an elderly gentleman who could be seen walking throughout the Pentland Hills carrying a spade and fixing and maintaining the paths. When ever the Park Rangers spotted him they would attempt to thank him for his work. However, he would just walk off without a word. The name Phantom's Cleugh was given to the valley by the Park Rangers when they were asked by Harvey's what they should use on their next generation of maps.
The cache can be attempted from multiple directions including Bonaly, Harlaw and Flotterstone.
I have walked to the cache site in trainers before, but only when it has been dry for around a week before I set off. Currently, boots are strongly recommended. The path to the cache site is clearly defined although it can be very muddy in places.
When you have located the cache, the Challenge information is on the back of the log book.
