Raccoon Creek offers many miles of great paddling as it meanders through dense woods, open fields, and steep valleys. The creek is normally runnable during the spring and in the summer following heavy rains. Boat access is available at Raccoon Creek State Park, Independence, Green Garden, and Raccoon Creek Road near Route 18. Although the creek is primarily gentle flowing with small rapids, the last several miles of the creek before it's confluence with the Ohio River contain a number of larger rapids and drops.
About 2 miles before Raccoon Creek empties into the Ohio River, a small waterfall is visible on the river-right side of the creek. I've often stopped at this spot to stretch, have a snack, and enjoy the waterfall and rushing stream. While it may be possible to approach this cache by land, I recommend launching a canoe or kayak at the access site near Green Garden Shopping Plaza, floating down to the cache, and taking out before Route 18. This will make for a nice half-day trip of about 11 miles. I've provided all of the coordinates you will need. Please respect the water and watch for downed trees blocking the channel. The current water level of Raccoon Creek is available here. When I placed the cache, the level was about 2.75 feet. I suggest a minimum level of 2.5 feet. If you find the cache while Raccoon Creek is at this level, the small stream that forms the waterfall should also be running at a nice level.
The cache is a small cylindrical container covered in duct tape. It is inside a cavity of a large rock on the right side of the stream when looking up towards the waterfall. Please be sure to conceal the cache well after you find it. The terrain is listed as a 5 because I've hidden this cache with the intention of it being found by boat. As I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of ATV trails and pipelines/powerlines through the valley, so a land approach is likely possible.
