After months of research, biologists have discovered a new nesting ground for the seldom seen chameleons. The rugged beauty of the Middle Fork trail is the hypothesized draw for these creatures - sized just larger than a film canister. Studies have shown that this group of chameleons has evolved to withstand the harsh Pacific NW weather. As a result, these chameleons are much better tempered than the dreaded Tolt McDonald variety, but they still try to evade passers by with their camouflauge skin coloring.

The Middle Fork trail is one of the best trails around when the weather is dry. The singletrack is generally mild with short steep sections and technical roots and rocks to navigate. The views are amazing by the river and very peaceful as the trail slips back into old growth forest. Although this can play tricks on GPS signals, it is well worth the possible frustrations.

The trail is open to hikers on a year round basis, but only open to bikes during the summer and early fall seasons. As a compromise to allow bikes on the trail, the Alpine Lakes Protection Society, BBTC, Middle Fork Outdoor Recreation Coalition and Washington Trails Association agreed to let mountain bikers use this trail only on odd numbered days (August 13th = GREAT! August 14th = no bikes). Please respect these rules and any postings at the trailhead if you are on bike so that the trail will remain open to mountain bikes in the future. Always yield to hikers and let them know you're there. It's a great trail by foot or pedal.

NW FOREST PASS IS REQUIRED You may buy a day pass at the trailhead for $5.
