A 2 stage cache and hike in the Mattatuck State Forest. This
cache was placed for my wife, who liked to hike this area with her
family when she was growing up.
From main parking, go through the old gate on the right and
follow the fire road towards stage 1, located near the Duck Pond.
There can be a fair amount of bounce, so feel free to check the
clue. From there, continue to follow the trail along the edge of
the pond, which will connect to the blue blaze trail and up to the
final stage. You can follow the trail to within 100' of the
cache.
Note: After Stage 1, be sure to choose "up" if you encounter an
intersection of trails.
Main parking: room for one car, maybe two if you're
creative. Please do not park right in front of the newer gate on
the left. That is an access gate for the neighboring tree farm.
Alternate parking: Right at the trailhead for the
Mattatuck Trail on Carter Road, near the intersection with Wilton
Road. Room for one vehicle, though the curb may be too high for
anything other than an SUV or truck.
For both parking areas, DO NOT PARK ON THE
ROAD. The road is narrow and has blind corners, so the
chance of an accident can be high if you do not pull your car
completely off the road.
